Peerifool is an incredible fairytale from the Orkneys with a gutsy little heroine. It was taken from a recitation by an old woman (whose name was not considered worth recording to history.) The collector was Mr D. J. Robertson and the story was first published in the July 1889 edition of Longman's Magazine. Can you imagine that weather-beaten old woman sitting in a corner of her croft as she told Mr Robertson the tale? With the wild sea wind gusting outside and the peat fire smouldering, she would have been cackling with delight over this feminist adventure in which a little girl outwits a great, big, scary ogre.... click on his picture to see more photos. |
